Sitting all day is not great for your health, but neither is standing all day. Unfortunately, due to the nature of desk work, many people are sitting or standing all day, every day. If you can, you should consider alternating between the two for different reasons.

1. Alternating Improves Concentration

If you can alternate between sitting and standing while working, you can improve your blood flow. Better blood flow results in more oxygen to your brain, allowing for better brain function. Naturally, better brain function leads to mental clarity and the ability to focus while you work.

You may also feel better about the work you are doing if you alternate sitting and standing. Concentration generally causes you to focus more on your work resulting in more productivity. As a result, you’d feel better about your work.

2. Enhance Brain Function And Creativity

If you are a creative type, you likely spend plenty of time between sitting and standing all the time. It has been scientifically proven that if you alternate between sitting and standing, you will come up with more new ideas and be extra creative. If you can get a walk-in, you will be even better off in the creative department.

3. Burn Those Calories

Let us face it — sitting down all day in front of a computer does not precisely burn lots of calories. By the time you are done with work, you are probably ready to go home and relax. Gym time is not likely the first thing on your mind. When you alternate sitting and standing to work, your heart pumps more blood through your body, and you burn more calories in the process. While this does not mean you should not exercise, the extra movement does at least give you a boost.

Sit-stand workstations are an option to get you alternating if you can maintain the use. Many people want to use it, but use drops off after time. Other people suggest using treadmill or bicycle workstations, but those can sometimes negatively impact performance due to the constant movement. You will have to figure out what works best for you.

4. Get More Energy

Sitting all day leaves you feeling fatigued. If you go back and forth between standing and sitting, you can energize your body. When you feel the lag that shows up in the afternoon, stand up and walk around to improve your performance. All the movement raises your metabolism and energizes you in the process.

As you go through your day, you should work in 20-minute increments and take breaks between those work times. By standing up and moving, you will start getting the benefits of making yourself more productive and feeling better throughout the day. Regular movement can be easier to maintain than using sit-stand workstations.
